A Chord on Guitar (Major)

A major is part of the essential three-chord set (A, D, E) that plays hundreds of songs.

How to play it

  1. Place your 1st finger on the 2nd fret of the D (4th) string.
  2. Place your 2nd finger on the 2nd fret of the G (3rd) string.
  3. Place your 3rd finger on the 2nd fret of the B (2nd) string.
  4. Strum from the A (5th) string down - skip the thickest string.
Fingering tip: Press just behind the fret wire, not on top of it. If a note buzzes, add a little pressure or move closer to the fret.

Practice loops

Play these slowly with one strum per beat. Loop each line for two minutes.

  • A - D - E - the classic three-chord progression. Strum each chord four times, then change.
  • A - E - D - E - rock and roll standby. Strum each chord four times, then change.
