F Chord on Guitar (Major)
F major is the first barre chord most players meet. It is a rite of passage - and there is an easier four-string version below while you build strength.
How to play it
- Barre your 1st finger across all six strings at the 1st fret.
- Place your 2nd finger on the 2nd fret of the G (3rd) string.
- Place your 3rd finger on the 3rd fret of the A (5th) string.
- Place your 4th finger on the 3rd fret of the D (4th) string.
- Strum all six strings slowly and check each note rings.
Fingering tip: Press just behind the fret wire, not on top of it. If a note buzzes, add a little pressure or move closer to the fret.
Easier version: Easy F
If the barre is not happening yet, play the four middle strings only. It is still a real F chord and fits every song that calls for one.
Practice loops
Play these slowly with one strum per beat. Loop each line for two minutes.
- F - C - G - Am - pop progression variant. Strum each chord four times, then change.
