6th Chords on Guitar: Major 6 and Minor 6
Sixth chords add the 6th note of the scale to a plain major or minor chord. They have a warm, slightly old-time swing to them - classic country, early rock and roll, and jazz endings.
Major 6
Formula: 1 - 3 - 5 - 6. Cheerful like a major chord but with a wink. G6 is two fingers.
C6
G6
Minor 6
Formula: 1 - ♭3 - 5 - 6. Moody and cinematic - think detective-movie tension.
Am6
Trick: a 6th chord is the same notes as a minor 7 chord rooted a third lower - C6 and Am7 contain identical notes (C E G A). Which name you use depends on which note is the bass.
